Sailor Profile: Paul Kilkenny

What attracted you to the moth?

Why a Mach 2?  I’d been sailing a Prowler Mark IV was ready for a new boat and , though the M2 wasn’t yet released,  I’d learned from experience not to bet against AMAC if I had any intention of competing well.

What was your previous sailing back ground?   Musto Skiff

What do you do for a job?   I’m a Mentor Teacher and Curriculum Coordinator in a very large urban high school district.

What do you drive, sports car or family wagon?   Sadly, my wife owns the sports car. I drive an environmentally disastrous Chevy Tahoe.

How long have you been sailing the moth?   Four Years

Whats your best experience so far?
The first time I flew the boat through a tight rate of turn and felt my body pulling a G or more I was hooked for life! No sailor should die without having had that sensation. Just narcotic.

Was it easy to foil?  I’ve seen none sailors foil first time out. The boat is engineered to fly and will do so sans highly competent pilot.

How about Gybing?  Gybing and Tacking the Moth on the foils isn’t that hard. As more of the mean and remedial  members of the fleet (like myself) share how it’s done an algorithm for the maneuvers will evolve that’ll have neophytes doing gybes and tacks within their first few weeks in the boat. Of this I have no doubt.

Have you found people in the class supportive? The US Moth class display’s a camaraderie reminiscent of the Roman Empire under Emperor Caligula.

Have you traveled with your boat? Was it an easy process? ( more travel planned in the future)

Is set up and break down a total pain in the ass or not really that bad?  I can break down or set up my Moth faster than it takes a Formula 18 crew to rig for a regatta (really, side by side comparison).

Was the Mach 2 easy to figure out and set up?  Setting the boat up was easy. Sailing the boat well is so rewarding because it requires time and incremental improvement.

Happy with the quality? My boat has been sailed a lot and I’ve never had a single break down. Just amazing quality.

What mast sail combo do you have? McConoughy stiff and KA 10c for every condition
